Bernie Green And His Orchestra - Futura

Review by Teresa Koch

Futura, the latest album by Bernie Green and his Orchestra, is a masterpiece of big band jazz. The album features a mix of original compositions and classic standards, all performed with impeccable musicianship and a driving energy that never lets up. From the opening track, "Futura", with its pulsing rhythms and soaring horn lines, to the closing number, "Blues in the Night", which showcases Green's virtuosic skills on the saxophone, this album is a tour de force of jazz artistry.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Take the 'A' Train", a classic Duke Ellington tune that Green and his orchestra perform with a fresh, modern twist. The horns are tight and punchy, the rhythm section is rock-solid, and Green's saxophone solo is a thing of beauty. Another highlight is "Misty", a ballad that showcases the more tender side of the orchestra's sound. The lush, romantic arrangement is a perfect backdrop for Green's soulful saxophone playing.

The mono version defeats the purpose of the stereo action sereiss

This could have been used as the music score for a lot of 60s TV shows.

In mid October I found the soundtrack to an old 1960s movie on another channel. Since then, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole, listening to all the amazing music channels like this one have collected for us to hear. Thank you for the work you’ve done on this channel and for saving this music. It’s beautiful!!!

Monophonic sound, even though the jacket identifies this as part of the "Stereo Action" series! The Stereo Action albums (catalog prefix LSA) were originally marketed as a stereo-only series, but remember that monophonic cartridges and styluses (used on mono playback gear, which still was the majority of the marketplace in 1961-62) could not play stereo LPs without risking serious damage. Apparently, RCA reissued a few of the "Stereo Action" LPs in monophonic format. Until I can find a stereo LP of this album, it's nice to hear this rather eccentric music which my Dad owned in his music collection when I was growing up.

This must have been recorded in mono. A true STEREO recording would have the music bouncing from left to right channel and back.
