Little touches of the Shadows of Knights tune "Gospel Zone" towards the end in there that I never noticed before.
This could have probably been a bigger hit nationwide if the distribution and stations around the States picked it up. It had all the right boxes checked in terms of classic Shames' music....nice hook/melody, great harmony in vocals, really slick guitar work (rhythm as well as lead work) and short 2 minute run time. Tried to jump-start the rock band we were in on this one, but we couldn't replicate this one ....just too short on skill/talent/practice. Loved listening to it.
Definitely the Cryan' Shames' finest moment, and a hallmark of first generation garage rock. Still have the original Destination label 45.
B Side I loved from "Sugar and Spice" which I loathed. Chicago band trying to sound English. Knew kid in a different band who pretended to be English.
Other thought I had: Shames' records were very comparable (in quality of product and musicianship) to Paul Revere and the Raiders who parlayed their 15 minutes of fame on the charts to a career-long rock nostalgia act.
A testament to what you can do with just two minutes of time on vinyl in the mid-60's. Tight rock guitar (lead and rhythm) arrangement and distinctive Shames' vocal harmonies.
Killer Garage Rock with nice Fuzz guitar, I agree! Thanks for posting it!
I'm from the south but I've enjoyed this band since day one. a friend of mine bought the sugar and spice album about the same time we were getting into the blues magoos and other bands to gather material for our own band to cover
frozen sun!
did you get your kicks in '66 with this one?? I was only 12 at the time but I sure did. Sometimes it pays to flip over them 45s to see whats on the other side. Lifetime memories!
Saw the Cryan Shames perform this at Notre Dame's Stepan Center probably late 1966. Must have been one of Dave (Grape) Purple's last appearances with the band--he already had his GI haircut. His bass playing was killer on this tune! One of the best and most underrated bands ever to come out of Chicago (or anywhere!).
it's only super great!!!!! dig it!!
Great tune!
@frederickus I've found two or three copies of this record (on Destination) in Cleveland. "Sugar And Spice" was a hit in Cleveland because WLS reached northeast Ohio at night! I also find plenty of early Ides Of March, New Colony Six, and Shadows Of Knight records!
THANK YOU for posting my fave Shames tune! Ya gotta be from Chicago to know this one!
So is this the original or a cover? Cuz I think this is the BEST version.
Formerly from suburban Chicago ( Hinsdale in 1966) now hearing this from Mpls St Paul in 2023 on YT
Somone asked me If I ever get tired of singing this..No I don't it is still a joy

These songs sure brings back my teen years. And at the time my high school boyfriend was still alive lots of beautiful memories with him and I. Sadly I lost him in
May of 1970. My heart still has much feelings for him we was engaged to get married but never happened. And this music helps me to remember him.
He played the guitar to he is missed and I will till the day I passaway myself.

You can sure hear that Rickenbacker sound!
Saw them many times in late 60's, The Hut in Park Ridge, Green Gorilla in DesPlaines and many other local clubs in the Chicago Suburbs
Played at our Lake Forest College Homecoming in '64 along with The Association! What a line-up!
For a what was essentially a garage band, these guys were actually talented and good. Saw them live c. 1966.
I saw the Cryan Shames in Kankakee, IL in September of 1970. They played at the YMCA. First concert I went to that had a psychedelic background to accompany the music they were playing. It was so cool.
Very much like the Searchers' version. I like it.
My sweet hearts song to. Me Eddie never forgotten God rest. His soul
