Review by Aindriu Mac Giolla Eoin

Saddest Tale Moon Glow by Duke Ellington And His Orchestra is a captivating album that showcases the legendary jazz musician's incredible talent and versatility. The 12-track album features a blend of classic jazz tunes and original compositions, each one expertly arranged and performed by Ellington and his orchestra.

From the opening track, "Solitude," to the hauntingly beautiful "Mood Indigo," Saddest Tale Moon Glow takes listeners on a journey through the highs and lows of life, love, and loss. The album's title track, "Saddest Tale," is a particularly moving piece, with its melancholy melody and poignant lyrics.

Throughout the album, Ellington's masterful piano playing is complemented by the exceptional musicianship of his orchestra, with standout performances by saxophonist Johnny Hodges and trumpeter Cootie Williams. The album's production is also top-notch, with each instrument and voice perfectly balanced and mixed.

"Saddest Tale" - but in the major mode!

This is such an enigma. I just have to know what the hell he's referring to. Such a powerful tune.

This is one of the first Duke Ellington records I ever heard, and still one of my all time favourites. Harry Carney's bass clarinet solo is just sublime- misty and introspective. I have an English Parlophone copy, and many years ago i took my old HMV portable, plus half a dozen records into work, just for a laugh. This was the first record I played, and the reaction was generally "Wow!" "That is amazing" "Who IS this?

Great but ironic Record for Me!

Among his other ground breaking accomplishments, looks like Duke was one of the first rappers.

Barney Bigard had a clarinet tone that can be identified from one note; too, as we find here, he had the ability to set a mood with that tone and the expenditure of only a few notes. Duke's very distinctive soloists, often imitated but never equaled, were among the most expressive of the Big Band Era. It's nice to hear Fred Guy's guitar in greater prominence on this side.

Duke Ellington is always Duke Ellington!

This would make a good double feature with _Moon Maiden,_ maybe as a prelude to _A Drum Is a Woman?_ Too long? Well, then to _Pretty and the Wolf_ or, even better, a kiss.

It doesn't get any better than this. Really wonderful photo background as well. Thank you so much.

This is so cool I can see Daddy sitting his chair and sipping on his smooth salty dog lol

The intro here comprises the main theme of the 1939 "Serenade to Sweden'. A case of Ellington borrowing from himself!
