Review by Humberto Erler

Elvin Jones' album "Brother John" is a masterpiece that showcases the legendary drummer's virtuosity and versatility. Released in 1992, the album features a mix of original compositions and jazz standards that highlight Jones' unique approach to rhythm and improvisation.

From the opening track "Azan" to the closing number "It Don't Mean a Thing," Jones and his bandmates deliver a captivating performance that is both soulful and technically impressive. The interplay between Jones' drums, Gene Harris' piano, and Joshua Redman's saxophone is particularly noteworthy, as they weave intricate melodies and rhythms that push the boundaries of jazz.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Lush Life," a ballad that showcases Jones' sensitive side as he plays with a delicate touch and subtle dynamics. Another highlight is "Smoke Rings," a bluesy tune that features a fiery solo by Redman and some intricate drumming by Jones.

About Elvin Jones

US jazz drummer (* September 09, 1927 in Pontiac, Michigan, USA; May 18, 2004 in Englewood, New Jersey, USA). Called by Life magazine "the world's greatest rhythmic drummer". He had two musician brothers: , a jazz pianist, and , a trumpet and flugelhorn player. Jones entered the Detroit jazz scene in the late 1940s after touring as a stagehand with the Army Special Services show Operation Happiness. After a brief gig at the Detroit club Grand River Street, he went to work at another club, backing up such jazz greats as Parker, Davis and Wardell Grey. Jones, with his rhythmic, innovative style, became one of jazz's most famous drummers under Coltrane.
