Review by Jim Clark

The Birthday Party by Idle Race is a classic album that has stood the test of time. Released in 1968, the album features a unique blend of psychedelic rock and pop, infused with elements of folk and blues. The songs on the album are catchy and well-crafted, with thoughtful lyrics and memorable melodies.

The album opens with "The Skeleton and the Roundabout," a whimsical tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Other standout tracks include "Morning Sunshine," a folk-inspired song with a catchy chorus, and "Please No More Sad Songs," a heartfelt ballad that showcases the band's emotional depth.

Throughout the album, the band demonstrates their versatility, seamlessly switching between different genres and styles. The musicianship is top-notch, with intricate guitar work and tight harmonies that showcase the band's technical skill.

I'll just start by saying the album cover photographer did Jeff Lynne no favors. I'd call The Idle Race's "The Birthday Party" album "considered" music, which just means music that comes in later in a particular genres lifespan, in this case the psychedelic rock of the Beatles, Moody Blues, The Left Bank, etc. It's clear that right from the beginning of his recording career Jeff Lynne was laying down the blueprint for ELO. Bright, melodic Beatlesque pop with moments of Roy Orbison-esque melodrama. Jeff's vocals on "Big Chief Woolley Bosher" and elsewhere show that his voice arrived fully formed. Funny that he gradually abandoned this voice until "Face the Music"-era ELO. This is a highly listenable album. It was co-produced by Eddie Offord (who would later go on to major accolades as Yes' producer).

I discovered this obscurity when I was about 16 (circa 1980). I immediately fell in love. This daft bit of psychedelia encompasses bits of the Sgt. Pepper Beatles, Syd Barrett, and even Herman's Hermits in a way that predicts Jeff Lynne's later efforts with ELO.
