Review by Dave Schlueter

The Philharmonia Virtuosi, under the direction of Richard Kapp, has produced a stunning recording of Frank Martin's Concerto 1949, Petite Symphonie Concertante, and Ballade. The orchestra's precision and musicality are evident from the first notes of the opening concerto movement, and the soloists are equally impressive. The interplay between the solo instruments and the orchestra is skillfully executed, with each part contributing to the overall sound.

The Petite Symphonie Concertante is a particularly challenging work, with its complex rhythms and intricate interweaving of the solo instruments. The Philharmonia Virtuosi rises to the challenge, delivering a performance that is both technically flawless and emotionally engaging. The soloists, including violinist Arnold Steinhardt, cellist Leslie Parnas, and oboist Ronald Roseman, are all virtuosic musicians, and they bring a sense of urgency and passion to their performances.

The Ballade, a more introspective work, provides a beautiful contrast to the more bombastic opening concerto. The Philharmonia Virtuosi's delicate touch and nuanced phrasing bring out the subtleties of Martin's composition, and the soloists once again shine in their solos.
