Review by Joshwa Fuchs

Ruth Laredo's album, Plays Ravel La Valse Miroirs Sonatine Etc, is a stunning tribute to the works of the French composer, Maurice Ravel. Laredo, an accomplished pianist, brings a sense of depth and emotion to each piece, showcasing her technical mastery and interpretive skills.

The album begins with La Valse, a hauntingly beautiful piece that captures the essence of the waltz. Laredo's playing is precise and expressive, capturing the nuances of the music with ease. The following pieces, including Miroirs and Sonatine, are equally impressive, with Laredo's playing bringing out the complexity and intricacy of Ravel's compositions.

One of the standout pieces on the album is Une barque sur l'océan, which Laredo plays with a delicate touch and a deep sense of feeling. The piece builds to a powerful climax, with Laredo's playing reaching a crescendo that is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

Tempo is perfect, playing is great. I hate those slow, "romantic" renditions of Ravel.

This is pretty fabulous.  Interestingly, though, she does not observe the glissandos that most other pianists do in either of her studio recordings (Connoisseur Society and CBS).  Still, this is fantastic - and her CBS Ravel album is especially worth having.  I did hear her play this live in the mid 1980's and by then the horrendous difficulty the piece was too much for her at that time.
Very spooky to see the very young likes of Yuja Wang tear this piece apart.  So awe inspiring..
