Review by Corky Ellis

Some Party Rehearsals 1987 by Some Party is a must-listen for fans of punk rock and garage rock. The album features raw and energetic performances, showcasing the band's talent and passion for music.

The album starts off with "I Wanna Be Your Dog," a cover of the classic Stooges song. Some Party's version is faster and more aggressive, adding their own unique twist to the iconic track. Other standout tracks include "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," both of which are reimagined with Some Party's signature sound.

The production quality may not be perfect, but that's part of the charm of the album. It feels like you're right there in the garage with the band, experiencing the energy and excitement of their rehearsals.

Notes

  • Sheffield Band “Some Party” 1984 – 1987
  • Some Party were formed in Sheffield in 1984 and existed in one line up or another until the end of 1987.
  • Several members can be linked to other successful Sheffield bands and ventures.
  • Band Members:
  • John Pedder from? 1984 – 1987 Vocals and Guitar. (Went on to play Bass and Vocals with Babybird and later created Canute Records.)
  • Simon Beckett from? 1984 – 1986 Percussion.
  • (Went on to play Percussion with Treebound Story, Richard Hawley’s band and later became a successful Writer and Author.)
  • Mark Budden from? 1984 – 1986 Drummer.
  • Howard Goodison from? 1984 – 1986 Keyboards.
  • Mike Marston from? 1984 – 1987 Bass.
  • Phillip Martin from? 1984 – 1986 Vocals.
  • Dave Pumford from? 1984 – 1987 Harmonica.
  • Paul Ogle from 1986 – 1987 Drummer.
  • (Went on to later play with Sikorski, alongside Shaun Doane.)
  • Steph? from? 1986 – 1987 Guitar.
  • Songs written included The Mood is Blue, Memory Lane, The Midnight Men, Breathing Again, Club House, World Turned Blue, Sweet Memories and Stuff and Nonsense.
  • The usual Sheffield venues such as The Hallamshire on West St were frequented and more interesting gig listings included supporting Del Amitri at The Leadmill, an entry to Band of 86 at The Limit and a “Rock the Tories out “ gig also at The Leadmill.
  • At the time Rehearsal rooms were shared with Treebound Story in a little mesters workshop between Charles Street and Arundel Street close to the Red Lion pub which proved handy following rehearsals. John Pedder and Richard Hawley were both living on Hawley Street just down from Campo Lane and as far as I remember John and Dave Pumford were working together at The Crucible Theatre.
  • At the end of 1987 the band split. John pedder was next seen at Take Two venue and shortly afterwards formed The Cole Brothers before later playing Bass with Babybird. Simon Beckett played percussion with Treebound Story later becoming a successful author. Paul Ogle later played Drums with Sikorski alongside big Shaun Doane.
  • Not sure what happened to the others but im sure it would be interesting to know.
  • Recently I have re discovered blank cassette audio footage from the rehearsal rooms in 1987. This is currently being digitalised and should make interesting listening, mistakes quips and all.
