The Standard Sonny Rollins, an album by Sonny Rollins & Co., is a tribute to the legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. This album features some of Rollins' most iconic compositions, including "St. Thomas," "Oleo," and "Doxy," performed by a talented ensemble of musicians.
The album opens with "St. Thomas," a lively and upbeat tune that showcases Rollins' signature Caribbean rhythms. The band's tight and energetic performance captures the spirit of the original recording, while adding their own unique flair.
The album also includes a soulful rendition of "God Bless the Child," featuring the smooth vocals of guest singer, Abbey Lincoln. Her emotional delivery perfectly complements Rollins' soulful saxophone playing.
The standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" is given a fresh interpretation with a slower, more contemplative arrangement. Rollins' solos on this track are particularly poignant, showcasing his masterful control of the saxophone.
