Review by 勝山 修平

Blind Brand X's latest album, Black Dog Blues, is a bluesy masterpiece that transports listeners to the smoky clubs and juke joints of the Delta. The band's raw, soulful sound is a testament to their deep love and respect for the blues tradition, with every track showcasing their impressive musicianship and heartfelt vocals.

From the mournful wail of the harmonica on "Black Dog Blues" to the rollicking piano on "Hoochie Coochie Man," Blind Brand X infuses each song with a unique energy and passion. The album's standout track, "Crossroad Blues," is a haunting rendition of the classic Robert Johnson tune that showcases the band's ability to breathe new life into timeless blues standards.

Notes

  • "Worst day of my life when that dog died" signed the old man as he slowly and hesitantly reached out with gnarled and calloused fingers to grasp the ancient, weather beaten guitar that lay at his side. Strumming its rusty, untuned strings, the old man pondered an errantly languorous chord and wondered where the past and his dreams had gone. But then ... with a sign of relief he remembered ... the past and his dreams were right there with him ... ensconced in those rusty, untuned strings ... ready to bust loose like some crazy old buckdancing hillbilly juiced up on backwoods Kentucky moonshine and snake venom. The old man then joyously reveled ... in his dreams, his music, and his memories of a happy, old black dog ..."
  • All music written and/or arranged by Blind Brand X and Dixie Camille Lula Patton except where indicated.
  • Birdbrain of Wonder Mountain ... written by Ragtime Ralph in 1970 and played for Leo Kottke when Ralph opened for Leo at the Soft Rock Café, Vancouver, B.C., back in the early 1980s.
